Quality and performance
Our research has global impact, and its quality is consistently proven by our performance in national assessments.
We set ourselves a target to achieve a top 10 position in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), the new process for assessing research in UK Higher Education Institutions. The results were announced on 18 December 2014 and we have climbed 17 places to rank 5th out of UK universities.
Our submissions across 27 of the 36 Units of Assessment reflect our innovative and interdisciplinary research, ranging from Clinical Medicine to Law to Engineering to Music.
REF is the successor to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, in which 33 out of 34 research areas we submitted included a significant amount of 4* research - the highest possible rating.
