At Cardiff, we are delivering profound new insights into the physical world. Instruments designed here are probing the furthest reaches of space as our researchers interpret what the results say about the origins and nature of the cosmos. Cardiff's scrutiny is also directed underneath the oceans and below the earth's crust, working with bioscientists to comprehend the micro-organisms surviving in these extreme conditions.

Understanding the Physical World

Research into the earth's climate and its changes over the millennia is one of many initiatives informing international debate over contemporary environmental challenges.

Other such initiatives include the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, created to find sustainable alternatives to a variety of industrial processes, and a range of well-funded engineering projects to explore alternative methods of energy production and transmission.

Engineers are also among the many Cardiff STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) researchers working with biomedical colleagues to deliver practical healthcare change, for example through the multi-million pound Arthritis Research UK-funded Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre.

Our applied mathematical strength is much in demand. We have been working closely with the NHS on modelling systems to improve patient management. Our acknowledged expertise in Operational Research has applications such as manufacturing, transport and tracking HIV/AIDS. A collaborative project with School of Mathematics and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). has created a new postgraduate mathematics course offering skills for students ready to compete in the ever increasing tough jobs market and support the development of one of South Wales' largest employers.

Applications of the software variety are being developed by Cardiff computer scientists to aid international rescue efforts, part of a dynamic portfolio delivering computing innovation in fields including telecommunications, biodiversity management and engineering design.
