Professor Peter Barrett-Lee

Professor Peter Barrett-Lee is a full time Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Professor of Oncology in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University and lead specialist in breast cancer at Velindre NHS Trust.  He advises patients on all aspects of non-surgical treatment of breast cancer. He is a past member of the scientific advisory board of Breast Cancer Campaign, and is currently the same for Dimbleby Cancer Care and a clinical fellowship reviewer for Breakthrough Breast cancer. He is also the chairman of the Cardiff CRUK Breast Research Group, and also of the UK Breast Intergroup.

Professor Barrett-Lee is also involved in a variety of clinical trials and research programmes, including co-chief investigator and grant holder of the NCRI Taxotere as Adjuvant Chemotherapy (TACT) in breast cancer Trial, also co-chief investigator on the NCRI TACT2 trial and more recently the chief investigator for the NCRN approved ZICE trial. He is also a member of the trial management group of the NCRN and Medical Research Council supported Adjuvant Breast Cancer (ABC) Trial. He is responsible for leading the biological predictor research initiative for the latter, attracting grants from CRUK and Breast Cancer Campaign.

Professor Barrett-Lee’s laboratory research focuses on endocrine resistance mechanism e.g. src, EGFR, HER-2 activation, the role of CD44 in metastasis and invasion, and the role of p53 in chemotherapy and immune response in breast cancers. His research team will be looking to collaborate with The European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute across this range of activities.
