Fitness to Practise
A number of programmes at Cardiff University are accredited by a Professional Body. If you are enrolled on one of these programmes, there is an expectation that you will, throughout your studies, demonstrate that you are fit to practise in your chosen profession. You will also be asked to complete an annual declaration of fitness to practise during enrolment. If you experience significant ill health, or breach University rules, or there is any other circumstance which calls into question your fitness to be admitted to and practise your profession, then the Fitness to Practise Procedure will be followed to assess whether or not you are fit to be a member of your profession. This page gives a summary of the guidance and procedures available.

- The Fitness to Practise Procedure will be used if there are any circumstances which call into question your fitness to be admitted to and practice your future profession. A non-exhaustive list of circumstances are included in the Procedure which include:
- drug or alcohol abuse;
- acting in a violent manner;
- falsification of patient or other professional records;
- a chronic or other medical condition which cannot be alleviated sufficiently by appropriate treatment or reasonable adjustment.

- After all stages of the Procedure have been completed, if you are not satisfied with the process and/or the final decision then you can complain to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator.
- At all stages of the process you can be accompanied by a friend or a representative.
Fitness to Practise Procedure
- The procedure is split into Preliminary Investigation and Fitness to Practise Committee stages, however, if the matter is serious enough it can be referred immediately to the committee stage, by the Head of School.
- If the University believes you are not fit to practice in your profession, you will be given the details and invited to a Preliminary Investigation. The University will then consider the facts including your representations and will choose from the following option:
- dismiss the complaint;
- give you a formal written warning, recorded on your record, which will be taken into account if you misbehave again in the next 12 months;
- allow you to continue your course with appropriate treatment and support;
- refer the complaint to a Fitness to Practise Committee.
- You will normally receive the decision of the panel in writing within 5 days.
- You are able to appeal the panel’s decision. How to do this and the reasons that you can appeal can be found in the Procedure and will be sent to you when you are sent the panel’s decision.
Fitness to Practise Committee
- If a Fitness to Practise Committee is to consider your case, you will be given 10 working days notice of the hearing; other arrangements for the Committee will be explained to you at the time.
- A full list of options that the Committee can take are available in the Procedure, they include to:
- allow you to continue your studies;
- allow you to continue your studies with close supervision;
- exclude your for an amount of time;
- require you to re-sit part of your programme;
- allow you to transfer on to an alternative programme that will not lead to a professional qualification;
- stop you studying and require you to leave the University.

- You can appeal this decision by writing to the Director of Registry, Governance and Students within 5 days of receiving the decision. How to do this and the reasons that you can appeal can be found in the Procedure and will be sent to you when you are sent the panel’s decision.
- After all stages of the Fitness to Practise Procedure have been completed, if you are not satisfied with the process and/or the final decision then you can complain to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator.
