Academic Appeals

As a student you have the right to appeal against a decision of an Examining Board.

  • If you are a student on an undergraduate or taught postgraduate programme you should use the Verification and Appeals Procedure
  • If you are a research postgraduate student you should follow the Postgraduate Research Degree Appeals Procedure.

Advice and Guidance

Whichever procedure you are using, you are strongly advised to seek independent advice on the academic appeals process before submitting your appeal.  Independent advice can be obtained from Cardiff University Student Union Advice and Representation Centre (ARC), Park Place, Cardiff or telephone 02920 781410.

Verification and Appeals Procedure

Please see the resources section on the right hand side of this page for a word copy of the Verification and Appeals form. Appeals have to arrive no later than FOURTEEN DAYS (14) from the date of the letter formally notifying you of your result. You must read the Guidance Notes at the front of the document before completing the Verification and Appeals form.

The Guidance Notes give you important information about:

  • How and by when you should submit the form;
  • The need for you to provide appropriate supporting evidence;
  • What are the admissible (permitted) grounds for appeal;
  • What are the inadmissible (not permitted) grounds for appeal;
  • Where to send your appeal form once all the paperwork is completed.

You are advised to read the full Verification and Appeals Procedure before completing and submitting the form – see section 1.09a of the Academic Regulations Handbook.

Postgraduate Research Degree Appeals Procedure

The Postgraduate Research Degree Appeals form is available by clicking here.

There is one other thing you must do before completing the form.  You must read the full Regulations on Verification and Appeals – see section 1.20 of the Academic Regulations Handbook.

Appeals must be submitted within two months from the date of the letter notifying you of your result and should be supported by independent documentary evidence.
