This note covers the following areas: definition of unfair practice, how to prevent unfair practice in coursework, and the steps that must be followed when an unfair practice is suspected.
The Unfair Practice Regulations as detailed in the Academic Regulations Handbook. These contain details of the procedure that must be used.
The Turnitin Plagiarism Detection Service is an online tool that can help identify instances of unfair practice. Information and advice about accessing the service is available here.
A new single case record has been adopted for instances of unfair practice. Flowcharts have also been developed to help guide staff through the procedure. These can be accessed from the resources section.
A suite of standard letters has been provided to assist staff involved in the application of the new Unfair Practice Procedure. The following letter templates are available to download from the Resources section of this page:
- Letter 1: Unfair Practice Co-ordinator inviting student to attend a meeting
- Letter 2: Unfair Practice Co-ordinator sending student the notes of the meeting
- Letter 3: Chair of Exam Board to student who failed to attend the initial meeting
- Letter 4: Chair of Exam Board to student where the decision is that unfair practice has occured, and notifying student of the penalty
- Letter 5: Chair of Exam Board to student where the decision is that no unfair practice occurred and no further action will be taken
