German

For students with A level German. (Modules ML2136 German Language Advanced, ML7103 Introduction to German History and Culture for Advanced Students of German).
For Beginners. (Modules ML2137 German Language Beginners, ML7104 Introduction to German History and Culture for Beginners' Students of German).
Two subjects are available. German A for those with good A level pass or equivalent and German B for beginners. No previous knowledge of German is required for subject B, but we will normally ask for a B grade at A- level in another foreign language (including Welsh as a second language or equivalent). Students who started German in the past but did not have the chance to continue to A level may also be considered for entry to German B. In both subjects, German history since 1945 and elements of German culture will be studied as well as language skills.
BA students take a double module of language work plus a double module of historical and cultural studies.
Students taking BA Joint Honours German & Maths will take 60 credits in Maths, 40 credits in German plus another 20 credit module taught within the School of European Languages, Translation and Politics (staff in German will help find a suitable one) and will not take a third subject.
All students taking BA Joint Honours German and Japanese will take 60 credits in Japanese, 40 credits in German and a further 20 non-language credits taught within the School of European Languages, Translation and Politics and selected from the list published at the end of the Japanese entry in this Guide.
