Proof of Concept Funding

Proof of concept funding exists to bridge the gap between early research and market exploitation of a technology or innovation. For most cases it is a prerequisite that anyone interested in applying for any of these schemes should come through the Technology Transfer Group.

Below are some examples of this type of funding:

Knowledge Exploitation Fund (KEF) — Patent and Proof of Concept (PPOC) funding

The concept to be proven should be beyond 'blue sky research' but still some way from the 'market' and 'job creation' and can be in any field of research as long as there is potential for future commercialisation. PPOC funding can provide the means to establish a proof of concept of an innovation, by carrying out very focused further research.

The aim of this fund is to develop an innovation or technology to the stage where it is attractive to potential licensees. Costs of patenting or otherwise protecting the technology and of commissioning market research can also be applied for under this fund.

Calls for applications are announced periodically, usually for short term projects of up to a year. For the latest information on KEF PPOC funding contact:
