Engineering Infrastructure for 2020
Cardiff School of Engineering is recognised internationally for research excellence, as evidenced through the RAE 2008 results (over 95% of activity was rated ‘internationally excellent/recognised’ or ‘world leading’), and has a history of winning significant research awards which total over £40M in the last five years.
Projects are available which address the Engineering Infrastructure challenges for 2020 and beyond, with emphasis on both the environment and sustainability. This will involve innovative research that underpins the key solutions for the delivery of reduced greenhouse gas emissions and clean, resilient and reliable technologies for future energy, transport, environmental and communications infrastructures.
The following related themes will be addressed by students funded through the programme:
- Decarbonisation of the power sector, communications and future energy equipment
- Human factors: the built environment and consumer acceptance
- Environmental management
- Aerospace
- Engineering materials
A key feature of the programme is the involvement of industrial partners in all projects which will allow each PhD student to benefit from direct interaction with practising engineers, researchers and managers. The industry link and experience gained on placement will provide students with an excellent foundation for a successful professional career.
