     Large Research Equipment Fund

Deadline for Applications: 12noon Monday 9th May 2011.

Academic Schools are invited to apply for the Large Research Equipment Fund (LREF). An allocation of c.£1M for session 2011/12 is available to support equipment replacement at a proposed minimum threshold of K£200.

The LREF will be used for replacing large items of research equipment which, normally, are required for use by more than one school.  In this context, ‘replacement’ would include not only replacing equipment which is inadequate or obsolete (for example, through upgrading to a model with higher capacity or specification), but also through replacing with equipment which provides the required service through a substantially different or totally new technological approach. Applications should demonstrate how the equipment will meet a strategic need for participating schools, such as enhancing their capacity to secure external research funds.

The documents attached below provides further detailed information and a proforma and costing spreadsheet for completion and return.

Prior to submitting an application, potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact either Judith Bown in PLANN planning@cf.ac.uk or Dave Bembo bembo@cf.ac.uk in RACDV to discuss the proposal and confirm that it meets the criteria outlined.

    Distinguished Lecture Series

Deadline for applications has now closed.

As part of a new initiative to raise the profile of research at Cardiff University with the international academic community, the Research Committee is launching a high-profile series of Cardiff University Distinguished Lectures.

Academic schools are invited to apply to the Distinguished Lecture Series fund which is available through Research Committee Initiative funds.  A fund of K£25 is available for session 2010/ 11 of which up to K£5 is available to support each of the four lectures which are broadly focused on the following four subject areas: Biomedical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities (loosely based upon the four main REF panels and reflecting the breadth of Cardiff’s research). A further K£5 will be retained centrally to help fund publicity for events.

The fund has the specific objective of contributing to the establishment and consolidation of Cardiff’s international reputation for academic impact.  By inviting a high-profile lead speaker to deliver a key-note lecture as part of a wider programme of activities, Schools and therefore the University, will also have an opportunity to showcase excellent research to a series of eminent and influential guest speakers, as well as to a wider audience.
