Medicines & Patient Outcomes
Vision statement
Research focused upon understanding the science of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and its translation into practice with the aim of improving functional behaviour (i.e. physical and psychosocial) of patients with chronic diseases and optimising intended treatment outcomes. The area involves the need for fundamental understanding and interpretation of scores generated through the use of measurement techniques. To create understanding of the interface between clinical, patient-reported (i.e. humanistic) and economic outcomes, a systematic approach is adopted to measure ‘minimally important difference’ (MID) of patient reported outcomes with the aim of establishing their clinical significance and thus leading to their use in routine clinical practice. Strong collaborations exist with this thematic programme and the schools of Social Sciences and Philosophy (i.e. applied ethics), departments of Dermatology, Neurology, Renal and Geriatric Medicine, as well as departments of Public Health and Epidemiology.
