P2X7 receptors in human osteoblasts
We are interested in the expression and function of purinergic P2X7 receptors in human osteoblasts, bone-forming cells and their modulation by oestrogen and corticosteroids.
Aims of Project
Evidence was obtained to that this receptor is indeed expressed in these cells as this had been unclear previously. Furthermore, we have shown that the P2X7 receptor is functional in these cells. Currently, we are investigating the relevance of P2X7 receptor expression for bone formation in osteoblasts using a variety of assays. Ultimately, this work could be used to develop novel treatments for conditions such as osteoporosis.
