Monmouth Science Initiative

The Monmouth Science Initiative (MSI) has brought ca 40-50 'A' level pupils from schools 
based in the Monmouth area into research labs in Cardiff University to see what life is like as 
an undergraduate.  Two visits per year during November and March the Cardiff School of 
Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences hosts groups of interested pupils in several research 
areas.  

March 2014 visit

The students visited Pharmacy on 12th March 2014.  They were introduced to 
Prof James Birchall who welcomed the students and gave an introduction about Pharmacy.

by Prof James Birchall and 
Prof Mark Gumbleton.

November 2013 visit

The Students visited PHRMY on 20th November 2013 and their visit included:

Andrea Brancale - Drug Discovery, for example Molecular Modelling

Mark Gumbleton - Biological barriers

James Birchall - GMP Suite for clinical trial formulation

Polina Prokopovich - Free radical polymerization reaction forming bone cement.

Valentina Ferrari and Michaela Serpi - NMR and spectra

In addition students have previously been involved in:

Pharmaceutical formulation - Jean-Yves Maillard which include specialist facilities 

Target validation - Stephen Hiscox
