Step 2 approval given for the joint Taylor's University pharmacy course

The General Pharmaceutical Council in London have announced their step 2 approval of the joint pharmacy degree programme between the Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Taylor's University in Malaysia.  This follows an on-site inspection in May 2011.  The next visit by GPhC is scheduled for May 2012, whence step 3 approval will be sought.

Meantime a new Dean has been appointed and started work in December 2011.  She is Associate Professor Dr Salmiah Mohd. Ali, who previously had established Diploma in Pharmacy and Bachelor of Pharmacy courses in University Technology Mara (UiTM) and was the founding Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at (UiTM).  She has 30 years experience as a pharmacist in Malaysia, including posts as Chief Pharmacist in district hospitals and head of a quality control laboratory for the Ministry of Health, before entering academia in 1998.  She was awarded a PhD by Nottingham University, UK in 2006 for her thesis entitled “Type 2 Diabetes in Malaysia: Perspectives of Malay Patients and their Health Care Professionals”.

Cardiff University and Taylor's University  are working towards full accreditation of this collaborative MPharm  with both the General Pharmaceutical Council in UK and the  Malaysian Pharmacy Board.   Staff from Cardiff visit Taylor's on a regular basis to assist in programme and staff development.

 

N.B. The existing MPharm taken by students at Cardiff University is fully accredited in the UK.  The Welsh School of Pharmacy has been an accredited course provider since the 1930's.
