BMA Highly Commends Latest Edition of Book

21 September 2012

Hugo & Russell 8th Edition - cover

For the past 18 years the British Medical Association has presented awards for medical books published in the previous year.  This year 681 book nominations were considered by the BMA awards committee  in 21 medical categories.  These books were judged by reference to their accuracy, currency, relevance, quality and value for money.

At a ceremony on the 13th September held at the BMA Headquarters in London, the undergraduate text Hugo & Russells’ Pharmaceutical Microbiology [Editors: S.P. Denyer, N.A. Hodges, S.P. Gorman & B.F. Gilmore; Publishers, Wiley-Blackwells] was one of just three books highly commended in the category of pharmacology.  It was described as “a comprehensive guide to all medical microbiology trainees and pharmacists.  It links basic science with clinical practice in a clear and understandable way.”  The association of this book, now in its 8th edition, with the Cardiff School of Pharmacy has been constant since 1977 with senior editorship passing from the late Professor Denver Russell to Professor Stephen Denyer in 2004.

Professor Gary Baxter, Head  of the Cardiff School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, welcomed this recognition:  "Hugo & Russell's Pharmaceutical Microbiology has been directly associated with this School for more than 30 years. Latterly, under my colleague Stephen Denyer's editoriship, Hugo & Russell  has grown to become a core text for  undergraduate pharmacy students. The BMA commendation is deserved recognition of the book's high quality and of the editors' and chapter authors' scholarly and student-focussed approach."
