Dr Andrea Brancale  -  PhD

Career Profile

I have graduated in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1996. I have moved to Cardiff at the end of 1997 and I have completed my PhD at the Welsh School of Pharmacy in 2001 under the supervision of Prof McGuigan working on a novel class on anti-VZV (Varicella Zoster Virus) nucleosides. Following a two year post-doctoral position under the supervision of Prof. McGuigan, I was appointed lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry at the Welsh School of Pharmacy in 2002 and promoted to senior lecturer in 2011.

Research Interest

Before being appointed as lecturer, my research experiences were mainly in the design and synthesis of novel antiviral nucleosides and nucleotides. When I have started my appointment I have directed my research interests in a different direction, focusing my studies on the use of computer-aided techniques to design and discover novel antiviral and anti-cancer compounds.

I am the Chemistry Editor of Antiviral Chemistry and Chemotherapy
