Welcome from the Head of School
Professor Gary Baxter, Head of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
For nearly a century, the Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (formerly the Welsh School of Pharmacy at Cardiff University) has cultivated a strong tradition of innovative pharmaceutical education, scientific research and service to the pharmacy profession. As a free-standing constituent School of one of the UK's leading research-intensive Universities, we are a uniquely "complete" school of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.
We are effectively an institute of pharmaceutical science research: all of the pharmaceutical scientific disciplines represented in the School contribute to a dynamic research culture. Our educational provision, richly informed and supported by our research, includes the fully accredited undergraduate Master of Pharmacy programme, a number of postgraduate taught diplomas and Master of Science programmes, postgraduate research degrees, and life-long learning. We are proud to be home to the Wales Centre for Pharmacy Professional Education, the major focus of post-qualification education and professional development for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in Wales.
Cardiff University has a vision to be one of the world's leading universities with an academic community recognised for its international distinction and impact. The School's vision is completely encapsulated in the University's vision. Judged by nationally recognised standards, the School is one of the top UK schools of pharmacy. In the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise, the majority of our research was judged to be of international standing with more than half of the activity rated internationally excellent or world-leading.
We were the first school of pharmacy to be awarded an 'excellent' for the quality of our teaching and learning in the Teaching Quality Assessment, and pharmacy teaching at Cardiff always features at the top of national league tables of excellence. In the 2009 National Student Survey, we were ranked joint first of all the UK schools of pharmacy for overall satisfaction, and our graduates consistently perform highly in the registration examination of the UK Pharmacy regulator.
There are over 40 members of full-time academic and teaching staff, in addition to technical, research and administrative staff. The School has a very active undergraduate student organisation, the Welsh Pharmacy Students' Association, as well as a society for post-graduate students. A wide ranging programme of research seminars is arranged for all staff and students. Outside visitors to these seminars are welcome. There are regular opportunities to join the School, advertised on this site. Information for prospective students is to be found in the degree programme section.
Whatever, your reasons for visiting these pages, I hope you will find in them a flavour of the range and quality of scholarship being pursued in this School. If anything here stimulates you to find out more, do not hesitate to contact us or arrange a visit. We look forward to welcoming you.
