“Studies in the Design and Clinical Use of Novel Drug Delivery Systems to Treat Gastroenterological Diseases” was the title of the thesis submitted by Dr Brian Evans to Cardiff University in 2010.

He was awarded the degree of  Doctor of Science (DSc) in May 2011 and graduated in July of this year.

Brian Evans first graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree  from the Welsh School of Pharmacy in 1964. Following his pre-registration year, he worked as a hospital pharmacist in Cardiff for over thirty years.

Whilst Chief Pharmacist at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) from 1974 to 1985, he was able to pursue a part-time Doctor of  Philosophy (PhD) degree under the joint supervision of the late Dr Kenneth James and Dr David Luscombe (later Professor and Head of School).

He was awarded his doctorate in 1980 for his work investigating the physical and chemical properties of carminative oils.

Over the intervening years Dr Evans continued his research working closely with the Department of Gastroenterology at UHW. Many of his 118 publications are the result of this collaboration.

Although appointed Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for South Glamorgan Health Authority in 1985, he retained his research activities until leaving the Health Service in 1996. From this time  Dr Evans concentrated solely on his research in gastroenterology, which  continues to the present day.

During his career in the Health Service he held honorary lectureships at both the schools’ of Medicine and Pharmacy, and as a hospital pharmacist received national awards for his research work.

In 1999 he was appointed to The Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM) and served for a three year tenure.

The award of a DSc is rare and appropriate accolade for a lifetime's research effort.
