BEST Awards 2010
Doctors named best in Wales
Two Welsh doctors have been honoured by the Wales Postgraduate Deanery for their excellence in training the next generation of medical professionals across Wales.
Dr Liam McKnight, Consultant Radiologist at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, and Dr John Rees, a GP at Llanfair Surgery, Llandovery were named educational supervisors and trainers of the year 2010.
All Welsh doctors and dentists in training were able to nominate the consultant, GP or dentist who they believed performed outstandingly.
Dr Jon Rees said: “I am thrilled to win this BEST award which recognises the importance of mentoring junior doctors. I genuinely believe that medical educators in Wales provide some of the very best post graduate teaching and tuition opportunities throughout the UK for doctors in training.
“To be nominated by my own trainee, and to be chosen by my peers as the winner of this award is without doubt the highlight of my teaching career and my involvement in medical education.”
The Awards also honoured Dr Roger Ramsay, Dr Huw Mason, Dr Paul Das, Dr Lauren Kraaijeveld, Dr David Thomas and Dr Eamon Eales for their contribution to educational supervision.
Professor Derek Gallen, Postgraduate Dean at the Wales Deanery said: “Wales’ educational supervisors and trainers play a vital role in delivery high quality training for our doctors entering the profession and encouraging more trainees to look to Wales to work and live. This award goes some way to recognising their very important and influential role.”
The awards are part of the ‘Supervising the Route to Excellence’ programme which aims to ensure excellence in medical training through the development and support of high quality educational and clinical supervisors throughout Wales.
Both winners of the award also received a Medical Education Bursary worth £5,000.
The Wales Postgraduate Deanery is responsible for commissioning, overseeing and monitoring the provision of education and training for some 2,600 doctors and dentists in postgraduate training posts in the NHS across Wales.
