Overview
I read Music and Russian at Durham University (BA and MPhil), and obtained a PhD from Cardiff University with a thesis titled Border – Bridge – Crossroads: the Construction of Yugoslav Identity in Music (1835–1938) and the Case of Josip Štolcer Slavenski.
My specialisms include music and politics in the Western Balkans, opera, and popular and film music.
I am the international reviews editor for the journal Muzikološki Zbornik/Musicological Annual, and co-convenor of BASEES-REEMS (the Study Group for Russian and East European Music within the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies).
I was a Lecturer in Music at Nottingham University (2013−15), and an Early Career Fellow at the Institute of Musical Research (Royal Holloway, University of London (2016−17)).
Research
I am currently co-editing a volume on Yugoslav popular music entitled Made in Yugoslavia: Studies in Popular Music (Routledge), and a special issue on music and socialism for the journal twentieth-century music (Cambridge University Press). I am also preparing two book chapters, one on Yugoslav film music and the other on Carmen in the Balkans.
