Teaching

I am a tutor teaching meteorology and oceanography at yr 2 level and applied marine science at yr 3 level. I also supervise undergraduate dissertations. In addition I undertake fieldwork to west Wales and Jersey with yrs 1 and 2 lookng in particular at the impact of storms etc on the coastline an structures. Part of my teaching is carried out on board the School's survey vessel Guiding Light.

I like to emphasise the application of my subject to real world issues such as aviation and shipping safety and other industries and organisations. To help we take students to visit major industrial trade fairs such as Oceanology International.

Nick left the University of Birmingham in 1981 with an MSc in Meteorology and Applied Climatology and joined the Royal Navy. During his Naval career he was a specialist in meteorology and oceanography and managed to cover most of the World's oceans serving on most types of ships. On leaving the Royal Navy in 1998, Nick joined the Department as a part time member of staff and teaches meteorology and oceanography at undergraduate level.

Away from the university, Nick is a director of a small charter boat company operating around the waters of south west Wales and is involved in a charity helping disaffected young people. He is married and has a daughter Sian.
