Dr Piero Tassinari
Lecturer in Ancient Greek and Latin
My research interests lie in the history of ancient science, especially medicine, and philosophy. I have taught Greek and Latin language classes in very different contexts and have worked for various exam boards in the field of classical languages for many years.
I have cruised extensively in the Mediterranean merging my professional interests with my passion for sailing. As a skipper and author I have recently been working on the documentary The Sea of Europe tracing the myth of Europe on her journey from Asia to Greece.

In the wake of my long-standing involvement with the Wellcome-funded project ‘Towards a Galen in English’ led by professor Philip van der Eijk I am contributing to the editing of the Cambridge Galen Translations series volumes, currently focused on Mixtures (De temperamentis), the Commentary on Hippocrates’ Prognostic, the Commentary on Hippocrates’ Nature of Man, The Usefulness of the Parts of the Body (De usu partium). As a by-product of the Galen translations series I am producing an online Greek-English Galenic dictionary.
In a similar area, I am working on an English translation with commentary of the first of Aetius of Amida’s Libri Medicinales
As my own research projects, I am investigating the theory of signs in ancient medical thought and, from a more contemporary perspective, the problematics of medical diagnostics and its implications for the definition of health and well-being.
