Mr John Hyde

Main Roles and Responsibilities

Primarily teaching on the BSc Clinical Practice (Thorn), also teaching psychosocial care on the BN (Mental Health) and Clinical skills on the BN (Common Foundation Programme).

I trained as a mental health nurse in Birmingham before taking up my first post at St Andrews Hospital a specialist Hospital in Northampton dealing with clients who had been difficult to treat or manage in their local area. This used a structured Behavioural approach with clients and was also one of the pioneers for using Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for clients with Personality Disorders.

Following this I moved to Cardiff working in Rehabilitation, Acute Care and most recently as a Community Mental Health Nurse. During this period I trained in Psychosocial Interventions, developed my skills in this field on the Community Health Studies course, before completing a PGCE whilst on a previous secondment to the School of Nursing.

Academic interests

My main interests lie in the training and delivery of psychosocial based interventions such as CBT, Family Intervention and group psycho education.

I am interested in what are the effective components of these approaches and how staff can be trained to deliver these interventions and how they are implemented in the clinical are.

Research activity/ interests

The BEP-C programme is currently being researched on its clinical effectiveness for clients and on what clients and facilitators see as being most useful.

In addition to this I have been involved in setting up the Depression Care Pathway: a guided self help programme to be delivered by Community Mental Health Teams with clients.
