Overview

Dr Zhu is a Reader in Mechanics of Materials.  He has been listed in different editions of the "world's top 2% scientists" published by Stanford University.  His research work is mainly focused on the mechanical properties and physical functions of different types of materials/structures.  He is a member of the Institute of Applied and Computational Mechanics in the Cardiff School of Engineering, and the tutor of PhD students in disciplines of the Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.  He did his PhD in Metallurgy and Materials at Birmingham University. Prior to joining the Cardiff School of Engineering, he worked as a research associate at Cambridge University.

His research involves theoretical analysis, computational simulation and experimental measurements, and his research interests include

He has authored/co-authored over 100 publications.   Many of his research papers are published in top mechanics journals (e.g., J. Mech. Phys. Solids;  Int. J. Plasticity), top materials journals (e.g., Advanced Materials; Acta Materialia; Carbon), top energy journals (e.g., Energy & Environmental Science; Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews), and top general journals (e.g., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci.; Nano Research).   His research papers are cited over 4700 times (Google Scholar) or 3800 times (SCI) or 3500 (Scopus), and his H-indices are 35 (Google Scholar),  30 (SCI) and 31 (Scopus). Dr Zhu delivered many invited research presentations at universities/institutes (e.g., National Centre of Nano Sci. & Tech. of China,  Peking Univ.,  Shanghai Jiaotong Univ.,  Huazhong Univ. of Sci. & Tech., Fraunhofer Institute, Glasgow Univ.).  He has been a scientific commitee memeber of many international conferences, and orgnised and chaired many international conference sessions.  He was invited to make plenary (e.g. 2nd International Conference on Computational and Experimental Methods for composite materials and structures, Wuhan, China, May 2017) and keynote (e.g., 23rd ICTAM, Beijing, August, 2012;  6th European Congress of Computational Mechanics, Glasgow, UK, June 2018) presentations at international conferences.  Dr Zhu is a member of the EPSRC peer-reviewer college.  He has acted as an external PhD examiner for many universities, e.g., Imperial College, Manchester University, Glasgow University, Bristol University. He served as the Lead Guest Editor for a special edition of the journal Advances in Condensed Matter Physics (2014) and is an editorial board member for a few international journals, e.g.,  Scitific Reports, Materials, Biomimetics, Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering, etc. Dr Zhu is a reviewer of EPSRC proposals and research papers for many  prestige international journals including all the top solid mechanics journals and many top materials journals, e.g.,

Biography

Dr Zhu did his PhD in Metallurgy and Materials at Birmingham University (Oct. 1994 -- July 1997).  Prior to joining the Cardiff School of Engineering, he worked as a research associate at Cambridge University (1997-2003).  His research involves theoretical anaysis, computational simulation and experimental measurements.  His research interests mainly focus on the mechanical and physical properties/behaviours of materials and structures, including cellular/porous materials, biological materials, nano-structured and hierarchical materials, composite materials, fibrous materials, functional materials, fracture mechanics, and energy harvesting.
