Overview

Carlos E. Ugalde-Loo was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He is currently Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the School of Engineering and the Director of the Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS). Prior to his academic role, he was a Research Assistant at Cardiff from 2010 until December 2012.

Prof Ugalde received the B.Sc. degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM, Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education), Mexico City, Mexico (2002), the M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN, National Polytechnic Institute), Mexico City, Mexico (2005), and the Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Electrical Engineering from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, U.K. (2009).

His research interests and academic expertise include power system stability and control, grid integration and control of renewables, HVDC transmission, DC technologies, modelling and control of integrated energy systems, modelling of dynamic systems, and multivariable control. He actively contributes to the 'Power Electronics and HVDC', 'Energy Infrastructure', and 'Smart Grids' research groups. He has supervised 18 PhD students to completion and is very active disseminating research through conference and journal papers. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles—several in top-tier Transactions-grade journals. He is an Associate Editor of IET Energy Systems Integration, IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, and has been Guest Editor for a number of journals.

Prof Ugalde has acted as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in high-profile CEU, EPSRC and industry funded projects. He was Cardiff's Principal Investigator for the CEU FP7 project BEST PATHS—a large consortium with 40 partners from 11 European countries. He was Cardiff's Principal Investigator in two Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) projects (with SRS Works Ltd) on the use of thermal energy storage for city-wide cooling systems and domestic applications. He leads the high-profile interdisciplinary consortium ‘Flex-Cool-Store’ (a >£1m EPSRC project), supported by BEIS, local authorities, housing developers and industrial partners, addressing the flexibility provision of cooling and thermal stores.

Prof Ugalde currently acts as member of the School of Engineering School Promotions Panel. He previously served as: REF Coordinator for the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, the ENGIN Erasmus Coordinator, Year Tutor of the MSc in Electrical Energy Systems, EEE/IEN International Mobility Officer, and Science Without Borders (SWB) Tutor. He is a Personal Tutor for Undergraduate and MSc students and Mentor for colleagues. He was the External Examiner for 6 MSc degree schemes within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering from University of Strathclyde. He is current appointed as External Examiner for the University of Malta (BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering) and acts as Technical Lead of CIGRE-UK for Cardiff University.

Prof Ugalde is a well-rounded academic member of staff recognised not only for his research but also for his excellence in teaching and contributions at university-level. He has received four 'Teaching of the Year Awards in recognition of excellence in teaching' and was a finalist in 2018 for a 'Celebrating Excellence Awards for Excellence in Teaching'. He is an alumnus of the Cardiff Professorial Leadership Programme, the Deputy Vice Chancellor's development and leadership programme for Early Career Professors (cohort 2022). He is an alumnus of Cardiff Futures, the Vice Chancellor's development programme for Early Career Academics (cohort 2015-2016). He is a founding member of the International Staff Network (ISN), aimed at providing support to international members of staff. With the ISN, in 2019 he won a 'Celebrating Excellence Award for Excellence in Voluntary Contribution' and was also a finalist in 2017 for a 'Celebrating Excellence Award for Outstanding Contribution to the University's International Activities'.

Teaching

Since joining Cardiff, Carlos Ugalde has taught at all levels from Year 1 undergraduate to MSc students, from school-level modules in large teaching theatres, down to 1 to 1 supervision. His teaching effectiveness has been recognised by colleagues and students, with an excellent Module Enhancement/Evaluation average for lecture delivery since joining Cardiff (>4.5/5) and excellent student feedback.
