Overview

I work in Cardiff University's Centre for High Frequency Engineering, which I led from 2010-2022. I specialise in the fundamental properties, electromagnetic modelling and applications of materials at radio and microwave frequencies. My teaching expertise is in electromagnetic fields, electronic materials, circuit analysis, RF/MW methods and engineering mathematics. I worked for many years on superconductivity and its high frequency applications, but in recent years I've diversified to high frequency field interactions of materials more generally.  I promote interdisciplinary research via my research interactions across all of the physical sciences and many of the biomedical and life sciences. For example, I led a Wellcome Trust funded project to develop a non-invasive blood glucose meter using my patented RF technology, which is currently undergoing commercialisation in partnership with GlucoRx (via a UKRI knowledge transfer partnership). Other, currently-funded research projects involve the use of novel microwave techniques in electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPSRC, with Cardiff's School of Chemistry), RF/MW methods to investigate the role of frustrated Lewis pairs in catalysis (Leverhulme, with the Schools of Chemistry at UCL and Cardiff) and microwaves for the sustainable manufacturing of functional inorganic materials (EPSRC, with Sheffield and Nottingham Universities). I am an active STEM ambassador and promote science to all age groups.

Teaching

Since 1986 I have taught courses at UG and MSc levels in electromagnetism (primary specialism), RF/microwave engineering, electronic devices and circuits, materials, engineering mathematics and optoelectronics at the Universities of Cambridge, Birmingham and Cardiff.

Previously I have been Discipine Director for Electronic and Electronic Engineering at Cardiff from 2003-2006, and again from 2014-2017. I've held UG/MSc External Examiner roles at the University of Birmingham (2003-2006), Heriott Watt University (2012-2017), Surrey University (2015-2019) and Lancaster University (2021-).

I won the "Teacher of the Year Award", voted for by Cardiff students, thirteen times since its inauguration in 2005.

My main current teaching is on the following Cardiff modules:

EN1064 Network Analysis (Module Leader)

EN1084 Electromagnetism and Materials (Module Leader)

EN2076 Electromagnetic Fields, Waves and Transmission Lines (Module Leader)
