The design and assembly of tailored oligosaccharides as polymer therapeutics for improved treatment of chronic respiratory disease
Infectious diseases account for millions of deaths worldwide annually, yet increasing antimicrobial resistance and a dearth of antibiotic discovery have meant there is an urgent need to improve the efficiency and safety of existing antibiotics. To overcome these problems, my PhD is developing new strategies to exploit the ability of alginate oligomers, derived from seaweed, to potentiate antibiotic treatment. In collaboration with AlgiPharma AS and SINTEF in Norway, my work aims to develop and characterise novel alginate oligomers for clinical use.
