Novel antimicrobial restorative materials to manage dental disease.
My PhD project is focussed on the development of a novel, hydrogel-based dental filling material, in collaboration with the Soft Matter Research Group in the School of Chemistry. Hydrogels offer a biocompatible, physically tuneable system, where the incorporation of nanoscale delivery vehicles into the material will allow targeted, long-term delivery of antimicrobials for the treatment of pulpitis and root canal infections. My work aims to address the problem of dental restoration failure due to secondary infections, and to reduce the use of antibiotic treatments, which are both undesirable and ineffective in these situations.
