Elucidating novel roles for extracellular matrix components in directing stem cell biology
My PhD project focusses on investigating the potential of dentine matrix to regenerate bone tissue by inducing differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Whilst it is known that dentine matrix consists of a plethora of protein constituents that can contribute towards cell signalling, little is known regarding the pertinent molecules that induce changes in cellular behaviour. Moreover, these components may be acting synergistically to elicit potent cell responses. The aim of my project is to elucidate the components present within DDM that are responsible for promoting differentiation of MSCs into bone forming cells.
