Occupational Health Services
Occupational health is a specialty that considers the effects of work on health. It also considers an individual's health, ability and fitness to perform a particular job. Its purpose is to protect each employee to ensure that proposed work activities do not damage or compromise their health.
The Occupational Health Service (OHS) forms a strategic part of the University’s commitment to being an employer of choice, enhancing staff well-being and encouraging staff to live healthier life styles in an effort to promote wellbeing, prevent health problems occurring and impacting on performance and attendance. The OHS operates as an integral part of the University and is established as part of the wider provision of health services that the University offers to staff, such as the University Staff Counselling Service and its Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).
As part of the service the University will support a Proactive OH and Wellbeing Adviser who is responsible for health at work promotion, for proactive development of health and disability awareness amongst managers and staff, for professional on-going development of managers and for advice on matters relating to disability and well-being. It is anticipated that this element of the service will be available from 1st August 2014.
The OHS provider for the University is IMASS (Industrial, Medical and Safety Services), already working in partnership with the University and providing occupational health support for management referrals and health surveillance. This new service, accessed via a dedicated secure portal, offers staff members rapid access to a number of staff occupational health services, employment screening and health surveillance programmes with explicit service delivery targets.
