Emergency Contraception

If you have had sex without using contraception, or you think your contraception might have failed there are two types of emergency contraception. If you act quickly, emergency contraception can usually prevent pregnancy:

  • Emergency Contraception Pills must be taken within 72 hours of a single occurrence of unprotected intercourse, but the earlier they are taken the more effective they are.
  • A Interuterine Device (IUD / Coil) can in some circumstances be fitted within 5 days.

Emergency Contraception can be obtained from:

  • The University Health Centre
  • Your own GP
  • Another GP who offers contraceptive services
  •  The Family Planning Service (a list is available from the Health Centre, and in the related resources section of this page)
  • Accident & Emergency (A+E) unit at University Hospital of Wales (Heath).
