The School currently has four Research Themes: Structural Biophysics (Cornea, lens, lamina cribosa & sclera); Visual Neurosciences (incl. glaucoma); Retinal Degeneration & Aging (incl. AMD); Visual Rehabilitation (incl. special assessment clinic).

All research (including audit / service evaluation) involving human subjects or human tissue, that takes place within the School and/or is conducted by members of the School, is subject to scrutiny by the School’s Research / Audit Ethics Committee.
There are three research units based at the School: The Down's Syndrome Vision Research Unit, The Contact Lens & Anterior Eye Research Unit (CLAER), The Research Unit for Nystagmus (RUN) and the Macular Research Group.
'Cornea to Cortex' is a well established series of research seminars hosted by the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at Cardiff University. These seminars usually take place on Wednesday lunchtimes.
