Professor Simon John returns to the green, green grass of home

On 26th March 2009, the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences was delighted to host a public lecture delivered by Professor Simon John as part of Cardiff University’s 125 lecture series. The lecture was entitled “Using Experimental Genetics to Reveal Mechanisms of Glaucoma”. Professor John leads a team of researchers at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the USA, who are trying to understand the mechanisms of glaucoma with a view to improving vision care.

Originally from Llanelli, Professor John obtained a BSc in Zoology and Genetics from University College Cardiff, before pursuing a PhD at McGill University in Canada. He received the Cogan Award in 2004 from the Association for Research and Visual Science, to recognise his important contributions to ophthalmology and visual science. He has also been recognised by the Alcon Research Institute for enhancing the understanding of vision and eye health by being awarded $100k grant to continue to pursue research into the underlying causes of eye disease.
