Life Fellowship of The College of Optometrists Recognition
10 December 2012
The College particularly recognises the contribution Richard has made to the teaching of ophthalmic dispensing.
Richard has been an academic in the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, Cardiff University for 35 years. When Richard was appointed it was very rare for a department to have a member of staff who was qualified as a dispensing optician and optometrist, and his first objective was to set up a dispensing clinic, which he duly achieved. Richard has also consistently provided excellent tuition in ophthalmic dispensing and low vision.
Having been admissions tutor at Cardiff University, Richard has been responsible for the recruitment of thousands of students over the years who are now members of the optometric profession.
Richard has been a College examiner in dispensing and for the professional qualifying examinations. He has also been an examiner for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, a GOC visitor and an advisor for the National Accreditation Council for Certification Bodies and was involved in the accreditation of the assessors for the ISO standards.
Richard has designed children’s frames, a lens system for perimeter and has published widely. He remains a Senior Professional Tutor at Cardiff University and is as passionate as ever about his work.
