Currently I am the Acting director of Teaching for the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences here at Cardiff. I am a lecturer on the Teaching and Scholarship pathway, and as such, my main interests are teaching quality and administration, although I still maintain a side interest in academic research.
I have been module leader for 1st year Basic Clinical Techniques and 1st year Visual Optics modules in the past. Currently, I am module leader for two 2nd year modules; Clinical Studies and Dispensing, and Binocular Vision and Optometric Neurophysiology. I am also joint module leader for one of the taught postgraduate modules (Clinical teaching for Optometrists).
I am currently an assessor and examiner for the College of Optometrists (the official body that governs the registration examination procedures) and I am regular participant in postgraduate training courses, and I have also lectured to professional groups.
My interest in teaching focusses on the development of a curriculum that supports the development of the independent learner. This involves the students increasingly taking responsibility for their own learning, supported by targeted feedback and reflective learning practices, in order to prepare students for their future career as an independent practitioner in charge of their continuing professional development.
Currently, our sought-after students gain 100% employment upon leaving the university, and the last results issued by the College of Optometrists (who administer the professional qualifying examinations) show a 100% pass rate. The current first-time pass rate of 63% is some 20% higher than the average of the other UK Optometry institutions.
