Professor John Pickett

The School of Chemistry is very pleased to welcome a new member onto the academic staff. Professor John Pickett CBE FRS joins us on 1 November 2017 as a Professor.

Professor Pickett is an outstanding researcher with a global reputation for the quality and impact of his research accomplishments. For example, he was elected as an American Academy of Sciences (US) Foreign Associate in 2014, for his role as “an international driving force in the science and application of chemical ecology and in fostering advances in integrated pest management and agricultural sustainability”. His work has ranged from the development of ingenious instrumentation for the monitoring of insect (semiochemical) signalling systems, through the advancement of mass spectrometric techniques for the identification and quantification of these compounds, to the application of agronomic techniques for the improvement of crop productivity in Africa. For this latter work he was awarded the prestigious Wolfe Prize for Agriculture in 2008.

Professor Pickett has also received many other honours and awards in recognition of his scholarly contributions, including the 1995 Rank Prize for Nutrition and Crop Husbandry, election to the Royal Society FRS in 1996, Membership of the Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldinain 2001, and the International Society of Chemical Ecology’s 2002 Silver Medal. In 2004 he was awarded a CBE for his services to biological chemistry. Throughout his long and distinguished career he has published 25 patents and over 500 publications.

Professor Pickett has a long association with Cardiff University which started in the early 1970s and most recently continued in his role as an honorary distinguished Professor beginning in 2016. We are delighted to welcome Professor Pickett and anticipate that his appointment will continue to strengthen the international reputation of the School of Chemistry.
