On Monday 2nd October Cardiff Confucius Institute welcomed Professor W. John Morgan and Professor Qing Gu to introduce their new book, the Handbook of Education in China.

The launch event was well attended by Cardiff University staff and students representing a range of academic schools, demonstrating the wide interest in understanding more about China’s education system and the ways in which it is transforming.

During the lunchtime talk, Professor Qing Gu introduced the audience to some key facts about the education system in China, sharing with them the sheer scale of the system (with over 260 million students in China according to 2014 figures published by the National Bureau of Statistics of China) and key differences between the UK and Chinese education systems.

Following this informative session, Professor John Morgan then introduced the book and the ways in which it seeks to explore the multi-faceted Chinese education system. An essential reference for those interested in Chinese education, the Handbook of Education in China provides both a comprehensive overview and an original interpretation of key aspects of education in the People’s Republic of China. With a sharp focus on specific policy areas and using both original Chinese sources and other commentaries, it expertly places the topic within its historical and political context.

The Handbook of Education in China is edited by W. John Morgan, Professor Emeritus, School of Education; Senior Fellow, China Policy Institute, University of Nottingham; Honorary Professor, School of Social Sciences; and Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow, WISERD, Cardiff University, Qing Gu, Professor of Education, School of Education, University of Nottingham, and Fengliang Li, Associate Professor of the Economics of Education, Institute of Education, Tsinghua University, People’s Republic of China.
