Supporting the best to achieve excellence

24 October 2012

Four outstanding students who represent the "creme-de-la-creme" have been awarded a scholarship to study for a Master of Research (MRes) in Biosciences.

The MRes in Biosciences is a one-year programme which provides a valuable postgraduate qualification and enables individuals to improve their research skills whilst undertaking a research project in the laboratory of an internationally renowned scientist.  The MRes programme is now in its 6th year and is a very popular and highly competitive qualification, accommodating approximately 20 students per academic session.  For the first time, scholarships have been awarded to the top students, in competition, who had already been offered a place on the course.

Prof. Tim Jacob (MRes Course Director) explains "The scholarship students are selected by the MRes committee according to their academic achievement, motivation and scientific ambition. Since introducing the scholarships there has been a definite increase in the numbers of students applying both from the UK/EU and overseas. One of our overseas scholars, Prosper Karame from Rwanda, was unavailable to receive his certificate in person".

One of the recipients, Joe Wrennall, explains the importance of acquiring an MRes scholarship "The MRes scholarship was a huge honour for me and will enable me to gain essential skills to begin a career in research. The breadth of the topics covered, spanning all of the biosciences, and the world class researchers at Cardiff really sets this masters scheme apart from the rest and will serve me well in an increasingly competitive job market."
