On 11 July 2017, the Welsh Government confirmed a new package of support available for full-time undergraduate, part time undergraduate and post-graduate students from Wales from the start of the 2018/19 academic year.
Based on the recommendations from the Diamond review, the new system will introduce maintenance support for students for day-to-day costs rather than post-graduation fee repayment and the changes apply to students who start the first year of their course in the 2018/19 academic year.
Further changes for postgraduate students are expected for September 2019.
As stated by Kirsty Williams, Cabinet Secretary for Education, the changes will be subject to regulations being made.
