Come Hideout in Grangetown’s new local cafe

12 July 2017

The Hideout

If you go down to Grange Gardens today, you’re in for a big surprise.  If you go down to Grange Gardens today, you may not believe your eyes!

Tucked inside community venue, Grange Pavilion, is The Hideout; a community-focussed café run by local resident Moseem Suleman and three young women from the community (Jia, Sophia and Julia).  The Hideout team is providing more than just hot beverages and hopes that this small corner of coffee goodness embodies community.

Their involvement in the community does not start and end with their affiliations with Grangetown. The Hideout has two initiatives it is looking to implement in the near future. The ‘Buy one, Gift one’ initiative allows people to contribute to community life by buying a drink for someone who can’t afford one:

“It’s just to get everyone around the table, not only those who are able to afford it” says Mos.

The second initiative coming soon to The Hideout is ‘barista training’, which will train local people in quality barista skills enabling them to seek employment in the wider Cardiff area. This offers them the opportunity to give back to the community and makes Grangetown an even better place to live.

Highly aware of the ecosystem around them and the issues of littering, The Hideout team invests in compostable cup.  Mos, owner of The Hideout, said: “The gardens [outside the pavilion] represent growth and new life and that’s what we wanted the coffee shop to represent as well, to work hand in hand with the garden”.

Everything is local, the furniture comes from ‘NU Furniture’ a company that reclaims and recycles materials and the coffee beans are roasted down by the bay.

Moss told us: “We don’t want the café to be at the heart of the community, but the community at the heart of the café”.

So if you want to buy a coffee (or tea) locally and guilt free, head down to The Hideout, they’ve got you covered.

The Hideout is open 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 12 noon to 6pm on Sundays.
