REF success for Cardiff Chemistry!

Research in Excellence Framework 2014 Ranking

The results of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) have just been released and Cardiff School of Chemistry has soared up the rankings of UK Chemistry departments to an overall position of 9th, rising from 18th in the last exercise in 2008. Assessment of the impact of Cardiff's research ranked the School of Chemistry 5th. REF is a national exercise that assesses the research quality of British higher education institutions. The national 2014 exercise that assesses research taken place during the period 2008-2013 inclusive and has evaluated 37 Chemistry departments.

Commenting on the REF result for Cardiff Chemistry, Head of School Prof Rudolf Allemann said, "This is a fantastic result for the School and reflects the high quality of our internationally leading research in many important areas of Chemistry."

"The School research portfolio focuses on addressing many of the challenges, which are important to society, and chemistry will play a critical role in solving many of these important issues," said Director of Research, Prof Damien Murphy. "Our achievements in REF are recognition of the important contributions and impact our research is making across a wide variety of areas." The excellent REF result follows on from a number of other recent successes for the School, such as doubling the intake of undergraduate students in less than 5 years, significant investment in the School by the University and the recruitment of several new early career academics and University Research Fellows. Prof Allemann added "Our success has been built on the hard work and dedication of all our staff, and this is a very exciting time for the School as we move into a new era of growth for Cardiff Chemistry. Currently we are looking to recruit to 6 senior professorial positions, and so going forward our research diversity and capability will grow even stronger."
