Cardiff is now the "top sculling university in Great Britain" according to Welsh Rowing's head coach after exceptional performances by crews in the Diamond Jubilee Rowing Championships.

Taking place over two days (Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October 2012) on the Olympic course at Eton Dorney, the Championships gave Britain's best rowers the chance to compete with Olympic medallists.

The Cardiff University quad of students Robbie Massey, Josh Bugajski, Jack Thomas and Tom Barras beat a world-class field including Leander, Agecroft, Imperial and London Rowing clubs to take the silver medal in the 2000m event.

Robbie and Josh also finished fourth in the double sculls event competing in a field that featured Henley Royal Regatta winners, GB Under 23's and international medallists.

Ian Shore, the High Performance National Development Coach for Wales said: "I'm delighted to be able to report how the Welsh squad, representing their clubs and universities, performed at this regatta. In a truly world-class field, their performances helped establish Welsh Rowing's programme as one of the top programmes in GB. From a Cardiff University point of view, on the basis of these results, it is the top sculling university in Great Britain."
