This January, Cardiff University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is delighted to welcome Marjorie Weiss, Professor of Pharmacy Practice, as a new addition to the research team.

Formerly at the University of Bath, Professor Weiss is no stranger to the School having previously undertaken the role of external examiner for the Master of Pharmacy programme.

She now brings to Cardiff University her internationally-recognised research expertise in pharmacy practice which will complement and enhance the School’s current activity in this area.

Professor Weiss is particularly interested in how patients and prescribers make decisions about medicines. Her work has investigated how GP, nurse and pharmacist prescribers communicate and share decisions with patients in consultations about medicines. And she has looked at how these issues relate to patient outcomes and the training needed to improve prescribers' communication and consultation skills.

In addition, Professor Weiss has retained a strong interest in the development and evaluation of community pharmacy and how education can enhance the quality of community pharmacy services provided to patients.

Speaking of her new appointment, Professor Weiss said, ‘I’m excited and honoured to be working at Cardiff University and I very much look forward to collaborating with my colleagues across the research groups at the School of Pharmacy to improve patient care.’

Head of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Gary Baxter added, ‘We are thrilled that Professor Weiss has joined our team.  Her experience makes her a huge asset to the School and her expertise in pharmacy practice will be invaluable.’

Professor Weiss plans to build upon the School’s existing research strengths in the medicines optimisation and healthcare outcomes research theme.
