Lifetime Achievement Commendation for Optometry Lecturer

A Senior University lecturer has been lauded with a lifetime recognition commendation for her research into the visual problems of children with Down's syndrome.

Dr Maggie Woodhouse of the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences received a Lifetime Achievement Commendation in the 2012 Understanding Disability Awards. Dr Woodhouse was praised for her personal commitment to the long-term study of visual and cognitive development of young children with Down's syndrome.

Among the several accolades given, the judges expressed particular admiration for Dr Woodhouse's efforts in supporting a number of visually impaired schoolchildren throughout her career; the advice she has provided to parents and teachers, and her research team's efforts in raising awareness of how to overcome vision difficulties for youngsters with Down's syndrome.

The Understanding Disability Awards, an initiative of the Cardiff and Vale Parents Federation, are held annually to recognise the achievements of groups and individuals who have demonstrated active engagement in supporting people with learning difficulties.

Dr Woodhouse, School of Optometry and Vision Sciences said: "It is a real honour to receive this award, made all the more special because it was the parents of one of my patients who nominated me."

Head of the School of Optometry, Professor Tim Wess, congratulated Dr Woodhouse on her award: "Maggie and her team have demonstrated that by bridging the gap between their research and the community around them, they can have a real and lasting impact on the life quality and learning opportunities of those with Down's syndrome."
