Meeting of economic minds

Dr Andrew Crawley, Research Fellow at the Cardiff Business School, has been selected to attend the 5th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences, having passed a highly competitive multi-stage international selection procedure.

The prestigious meeting, which includes the participation of 19 Nobel Laureates and 460 young economists, provides a venue for the open exchange of economic expertise and inspires cross-cultural and inter-generational encounters among economists from all over the world. The economists, who are all under 35 years old and from more than 80 countries, will come together to share their knowledge and experiences, gain inspiration and motivation, and expand their contact networks.

Dr Crawley was awarded a three year European FP7 Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship in 2013 funded by the European Commission. As part of this, he is currently on a two year secondment at the University of Illinois researching the integration of economic regional impact models.

Participants at the meeting will hear lectures and attend master classes by the Nobel Laureates and take part in discussion sessions to exchange experiences and opinions with Laureates and other young scientists. The conference is designed to allow such encounters between the scientific elite of today and those of tomorrow.

"I am delighted to have gained a place at Lindau, the event is completely unique and given the age requirements and competition involved it really is a once in a career opportunity. I have opted to get involved in some of the master classes during the event and I hope to gain a real insight into what challenges Laureates feel those of us starting out should be tackling," Dr Crawley said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will give a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the meeting on Wednesday 20 August. Chancellor Merkel became Member of the Honorary Senate of the Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in 2007.

The 5th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences takes place from 19 to 23 August at Lake Constance in Germany. A record number of 19 laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics, will participate in the meeting – among them Joseph Stiglitz, John Nash and Edmund Phelps.
