On trend and on the wave

16 August 2016

Dr Jon Anderson, School of Geography and Planning has successfully secured Cardiff University International Collaboration Seedcorn funding to establish global university connections.

This work will include an international student placement who will undertake field work and develop research networks with Griffith University (Australia), University of Waikato (New Zealand), University of Hawaii, and San Diego State University (USA) for surfing spaces research.

Speaking about his research, Jon Anderson said: “This funding support means we now have the opportunity to take a closer look at the international surf community and the cultural geographies of globally renowned surf spaces. This extends a range of research on how best to understand the motivations, meanings, and politics surrounding the surf zone and its cultures”.

Jon’s work to date encompasses the exploration of cultural geographies in both terrestrial and marine environments, most notably in the publications Water Worlds: Human Geographies of the Ocean (edited with Dr Kimberley Peters), Understanding Cultural Geography: Places and Traces (Second Edition, 2015), and the forthcoming monograph Surfing Spaces (to be published with Routledge).
