Call for participants: Workshop on Environmental Governance

14 April 2016

Quito, Equador
Environmental governance for sustainable urban transformation: Exploring opportunities for knowledge exchange and comparative research on socio-environmental conflicts and their regulation in Brazil and the UK

In July this year an exciting workshop in the Centre for Sustainable Development, University of Brasilia, will seek to bring together early career researchers (ECRs) from Brazil and the UK with research interests relevant to the field of environmental governance, with the aim of building overall research capacity and enhancing ECR career opportunities. The workshop will provide researchers with opportunities to learn about being an ‘international researcher’ in the context of growing dialogues between the global North and South.

Rapid urbanisation and a burgeoning consumer economy, including developments associated with the tourism and leisure industries, raise major challenges for effective environmental governance. Environmental threats have stimulated the emergence of diverse governance forms, in which ‘state-centric’ modes of hierarchical control are supplemented, and sometimes supplanted, by a range of collaborative, participatory and market-oriented approaches. The workshop will seek to develop a research network relating to socio-environmental conflicts and their governance in comparative perspective.

Coordinated by Professor Trevor Jones (Cardiff University, UK) and Professor José Luiz Franco (University of Brasília),the workshop will include contributions from other leading researchers Dr David Botterill and Dr Rebecca Hawkins (both Oxford Brookes University, UK) and Professor Maria Elenita Nascimento and Professor Marcel Bursztyn (both University of Brasília).

We are now inviting Early Career Researchers from the UK and Brazil to apply to attend this workshop. ECRs are defined as academic researchers affiliated with UK or Brazilian higher education institutions who were awarded their PhD within the past 10 years. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Researcher Links programme.

Completed application forms (from UK-based applicants) should be returned to Professor Trevor Jones JonesTD2@Cardiff.ac.uk, or Professor José Luiz Franco (for Brazil-based applicants) on jldafranco@terra.com.br

Applications need to be returned to them before the deadline of 5:00 pm GMT April 22nd 2016. Successful applicants will be notified by 1st May 2016. Please contact Professor Jones or Professor Franco if you require further information.
