We teamed up with the National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) to attend Science in Health Live! 2016 hosted by the School of Medicine.

Hundreds of young people from across Wales and beyond gathered at the Heath Park campus for an insight into the science behind medicine and had the opportunity to take part in interactive exhibitions, lab tours and a series of talks.

Staff from the Centre were on hand to discuss how we bring together our clinical, genomic and statistical expertise with the latest technology to tackle the challenges posed by psychiatric, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders.

Laboratory technicians and researchers explained how we extract and sequence DNA and how this helps us identify risk factors for a range conditions, from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder to Huntington’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Students were also eager to learn more about the day-to-day lives of researchers and discover the career opportunities that studying medicine could open for them.
