Composers keep their Cardiff connection for Bristol concert

There is a special Cardiff connection at the heart of an upcoming concert at Bristol’s Colston Hall.
The concert will include the world premiere of a suite of variations by composers who all completed a PhD in Composition at the School of Music – Max Charles Davies, Adrian Hull, and Liz Lane. The suite is based around the folk song Bristol Town, transcribed 102 years ago by Vaughan Williams.
The concert, which takes place on Sunday 6 December, is organised by the University of the West of England Centre for Performing Arts and reflects on Bristol’s role as European Green Capital 2015 through the performance of several large-scale works.
As well as sharing their Cardiff connection, Max, Adrian and Liz are all now based at UWE.
Liz said: “Cardiff University School of Music has been an important part of my life for many years – as well as studying for my PhD, I was also an undergraduate student and until recently an Associate Lecturer. I am very much looking forward to this exciting concert and the premiere of I Have Heard Tell alongside Adrian and Max’s new works!”
Max Charles Davies (PhD 2012)
Max is a composer based in Cardiff, and is an Associate Lecturer at UWE where he teaches Music History, Theory, Composition and Performance, coordinates on-campus performances and is director of the UWE Big Band, Jazz Ensemble, Contemporary Music Group and Sound of Soul. Performers of his music include the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Warehouse Ensemble, the London Contemporary Music Group and Amy Dickson, amongst others. He has worked extensively as an arranger and orchestrator, and frequently performs as a pianist and cellist.

Liz Lane (PhD 2010)
Liz shares her Cardiff memories on her alumni profile.
Liz divides her time between composing, arranging, work as an Associate Lecturer with the Open University, and a part-time post as Senior Lecturer in Music Technology – Composition and Performance at UWE. She has also been working with OpenUp Music, the UK’s first disabled-led orchestras for young musicians, and keeps her Cardiff connection as tutor for an online course with Cardiff University Continuing & Professional Education.
Recent commissions have come from the Cheltenham Festival, Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts, Bristol City Council, and Norfolk Chamber Consort (USA).
Adrian Hull (PhD 2008)
Adrian is a Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts at UWE where he is also programme leader for the Creative Music Technology Degree programme. An active composer, he is also director and founder of Arcomis Ltd, which promotes new music, enables commissioning, hosts an online collection of new music scores, and stages international music festivals.
