Journalist joins Coleg Cymraeg staffing scheme

Welsh language journalism provision has received a significant boost due to a new appointment made possible through the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Academic Staffing Scheme.

Experienced journalist Sian Morgan Lloyd has been appointed as Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol lecturer at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies.

Sian succeeds former head of BBC Radio Wales Sali Collins and she hopes to further enhance the school’s Welsh language medium provision.

For the first time this year, students can study a joint honours Welsh and Journalism degree and follow unique modules such as The Newsroom.

The course combines academic study with practical learning opportunities and is eligible for the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarships.

Having worked all over the world for the Byd ar Bedwar for the past ten years, Sian will be responsible for inspiring the next generation of Welsh language journalists to work in the industry through the medium of Welsh.

Sian said:

‘‘My hope is to nurture young people’s confidence to study through the medium of Welsh and contribute to Welsh journalism and I know that there’s a need for Welsh language journalists in the field. My aim is to strengthen the provision, spread the word about our work all over Wales and build on the reputation of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and Cardiff University.’’
